Breakout EDU Funding Resources
If you’re hoping to bring Breakout EDU to your school or district but aren’t sure where to find the budget, note that our games not only build and improve problem-solving skills and communication but also meet the needs of several other high-impact areas that often receive special funding.
See below for examples you can use for budget or grant justification.
Breakout EDU games give teachers and students the opportunity to build and explore all five CASEL Core Competencies. By engaging in the game, students build self-management and responsible decision-making skills as they must problem solve in real-time and make critical choices to succeed in the task of interpreting the clues. They work in teams to reach the ultimate goal of unlocking the game, so their relationship and social awareness skills are utilized throughout the session. During the post-game debrief, students continue to build upon self-awareness by sharing in metacognitive discussions about why they made certain decisions, how their actions affected the overall success of the team, and how their role could be improved in future iterations of gameplay.
Breakout EDU games provide opportunities for students to practice communication skills in an academic setting closing the academic language gap. All games require students to apply content knowledge in order to solve puzzles that range in levels of difficulty. When playing a Breakout EDU game, ELL students have opportunities to learn through communication with peers using a variety of scaffolding strategies: restating other students’ comments, asking questions, adding their own ideas, etc. There are many opportunities to demonstrate their thought process using key vocabulary and gather as much data as possible about a particular puzzle in order to make connections to prior learning.
Breakout EDU games shift instructional delivery and create authentic problem-solving scenarios that better prepares students and allows them the opportunity to practice their literacy skills - boosting vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.
Over 60% of the Breakout EDU content focuses on a wide variety of topics related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math with both digital and hands-on experiences. Students can engage in these standard-aligned games as a way to introduce, review, or reinforce topics that they are learning in the curriculum. Each puzzle requires students to apply their academic knowledge to solve complex problems, elaborate on their thinking, work collaboratively with others, test hypotheses, and persevere to open a locked box. In addition to what Breakout EDU has to offer (for single STEAM topics or the combination of multiple disciplines), teachers and students have the tools to create and share their own games - both physical and digital!
With Breakout EDU, teachers can transform their learning spaces, modeling many highly sought-after techniques, enhancing the full classroom experience. Breakout EDU supports the shift in ownership of the learning to the way in which students of all abilities can be engaged, empowered, and assessed through the expansive offering of games designed for all ages and content areas. In addition to the puzzles that are based on academic content, Breakout EDU games also allow players to exhibit and reflect on the 4Cs of learning (Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Communication). Once teachers are exposed to Breakout EDU games, they can bring these immersive learning games into their own classroom and also develop their own games for their scholars.
Breakout EDU games create opportunities for every student to have a voice. The tactile experience of trying to open physical locks blended with the need to apply a variety of content knowledge and academic skills creates a safe learning environment where learners of all abilities can contribute. Special Education teachers use Breakout EDU in small group settings and transfer ownership from the teacher to the learners. The teacher becomes a support, allowing the students to truly work at his or her ability level. Games can be modified or or adapted based on the student’s individual education program.
The reusable Breakout EDU kits allow teachers to make a one-time investment in materials that can be used in subsequent academic years. Each kit also includes access to over 1000 digital, standards-aligned games that cover all grade levels and academic areas. Games provide learning opportunities to help low-achieving students master challenging curricula and meet state standards in core academic subjects, empowering them to leverage both their soft and hard academic skills. In addition, Breakout EDU promotes inclusion by creating opportunities, providing the necessary tools and supports for achievement, and allowing students to reach their own individual potential.
